Existing fixed structures may be used or adapted for use as decontamination areas (i.e. ambulance garages or entryways, parking decks or ramps and/or pole buildings.


George Washington University Hospital with the guidance of Dr Joe Barbera was one of the first U.S. hospitals creating a decontamination corridor from an existing breezeway including capability for heat with air vents.

Recently tent structures have become available for additional healthcare/mass care space after successful use in the Gulf war zones with the added benefit of preserving the fixed hospital environment from contamination and disruption of continuity of daily operations. Keeping an all hazards approach to the development of this area will also serve for natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes or non-intentional hazardous materials releases and isolation/infectious disease needs such as pandemic influenza.
