- EMS Fellows must be enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited EMS fellowship during the 2025-2026 academic year.
- EMS Fellows and EMS Faculty Members must be current NAEMSP® members at the time of application and maintain membership throughout grant cycle.
- Letter of Intent signed by the EMS Fellow and Faculty Mentor (up to one page)

- Must cite the grant as support if the research is published.
- Must provide a final copy of the manuscript—or, if not published, a final report of the research in the format of a research article—to GMR Foundation.
- Must provide IRB approval letter or exemption from IRB before the funds are released.
- Must submit abstract to 2026 or 2027 NAEMSP® Annual Meeting.
- The Faculty Mentor will be considered the awardee for purposes of contracting.
- This grant does not cover indirect costs.


NAEMSP/Stryker EMS Medicine Early Career Medical Director Award

Winner of the award will be announced by December 15.
NAEMSP has teamed up with Stryker to create a 24-month, $60,000-80,000 funding opportunity.
The purpose of this award is to foster the early career development of an EMS physician who demonstrates aptitude, talent, and potential as a future EMS leader. This award will provide support for a supervised career development experience in Emergency Medical Services to support the transition from EMS fellow to independent EMS physician at an academic institution and/or health system with involvement in a ground or air medical EMS system.

It is expected that the applicant will meet all qualifications for American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) EMS subspecialty certification.
- Diplomate in good standing of any American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists (BOS)
- The physician must be in compliance with the ABEM or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Policy on Medical Licensure. Licenses must be valid, full, unrestricted and unqualified, except for current fellows of ACGME accredited programs who may possess an educational or temporary license.
- Completion of ACGME fellowship at the time of initiation of the award.
- Current NAEMSP membership at the time of application.
- Initiation of award within first 2 years post fellowship training (e.g., applicant graduating from EMS Fellowship on June 30, 2024, or June 30, 2025, is eligible for the award beginning July 1, 2026).
- Planned affiliation with healthcare system and/or academic institution during the award period.
- Planned affiliation with EMS system during the award period.
- Identification of mentor(s) for the duration of the award period
- Before submitting the application, the candidate must identify a mentor who will supervise the proposed career development experience. The mentor on this career award serves to supervise the candidate’s proposed career development experience.
- The mentor should be an active EMS Medical Director.
- The mentor should be committed both to the candidate’s career development plan and to the direct supervision of the candidate’s plan.

- The Award is designated for the successful applicant and dispersed to the academic or healthcare institution.

- Award will be issued July 1 of each year for one half of the award to the institution/healthcare system. (Total funding of $60,000-$80,000 over 2 years)
- Award is intended to support the applicant’s career development
- No funds may be used for facilities and administrative costs (“indirects”).
- No funds may be used for mentorship salary, secretarial support, equipment, or vehicle
- No funds may be used retrospectively. Funds may only support ongoing and future work.
- Funds may be used to support the applicant’s salary and benefits.
- Funds may be used for educational activities (e.g., course work, conferences, or related travel expenses).
- Funds may be used for quality improvement activities.
- Prior to dispersal of funds, applicant or institution must submit a final 24-month budget to NAEMSP® for final approval.
- Attend the NAEMSP® Annual Meeting.
- Maintain NAEMSP® membership in good standing.
- Provide 1- and 2-year progress reports that can be shared with the industry sponsor and NAEMSP Annual Report.
- Visit the industry sponsors, at their invitation, for a mutually educational exchange of ideas and information.
Selection of an award recipient will prioritize career development activities that develop skills as an EMS medical director and/or EMS physician.
The work plan should outline the proposed activities attributable to or related to this award, which may include:
o Clinical or medical direction role(s) within local/regional EMS systems for which salary support will be provided.
o Educational activities.
o Quality improvement activities.
The award is not intended to support a formal research project.
The work plan should align with the activities outlined in the proposed 24-month budget, which may include salary support, quality improvement, or educational activities.
If funds will be allocated to salary support for a position (e.g., as EMS medical director or associate EMS medical director), describe the goals and objectives, responsibilities, and activities of the position, as well as a proposed timeline for career development within that position.
If funds will be allocated to a project or educational activities, describe the goals and objectives, as well as a proposed timeline for completion of the project or educational activities.
The work plan does not need to describe all professional effort/roles of the candidate during the work period (especially if not funded by the award). However, those roles may be described as they relate to the successful completion of the proposed work plan. For example, the work plan may identify specific activities carried out as part of this award while noting anticipated roles in the EMS system funded through existing or separate funding that will allow for the successful completion of the work plan.
