Video Challenge Educates Bystanders on CPR Ahead of EMS Week

May 15, 2019

The National Association of EMS Physicians® (NAEMSP®) recently released an educational CPR music video and challenged EMS agencies across the country to do the same. The challenge is part of a contest intended to educate the public on CPR best practices ahead of National EMS Week, May 19-25, 2019.

Bystander CPR can be critical to survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The ideal rate for chest compressions is 110 beats per minute, and there are many well-known songs that can help people maintain that rhythm. By demonstrating how to use common 100 to 120 beat-per-minute songs to perform CPR, NAEMSP hopes to encourage cardiac arrest bystanders to step in and potentially help save a life.

“We wanted to come up with a creative and entertaining way to bring attention to a very serious issue,” said NAEMSP President David K. Tan, MD, EMT-T, FAAEM, FAEMS. “The idea of performing CPR can be scary for people outside of the EMS community, but it can make a difference in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.”

To enter the contest, EMS agencies must upload their videos to Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #NAEMSPCPRChallenge before June 15, 2019. NAEMSP kicked off the contest with its own video, which has been viewed more than 2,046 times as of May 15, 2019. The creator of the best video will receive two free registrations to the NAEMSP Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, January 6–11, 2020.

NAEMSP is comprised of physicians and EMS professionals dedicated to providing leadership and fostering excellence in the subspecialty of EMS medicine and out-of-hospital care. NAEMSP is a leading healthcare advocate, most recently securing the passage of the Protecting Patient Access to Emergency Medications Act.
